I often hear you need to be strong to be fast. In a sense, yes, absolutely the stronger you are the more force you can push in a given direction. But, what is strong? Being able to push a car, flip a tire, squat, all of the above? Are power lifters fast? Yes, in shorts spurts. What about small, thin athletes that produce tremendous speed like Usain Bolt? For the most part we think of speed as a form of moving the legs and arms in harmony, generating speed, and using proper breathing to maximize surges but we forget that it is all controlled by the 12 pound ball on top of your shoulders.
